Courts Boost for Phoenix Tennis Club

Thanks to a grant from the Foundation for Sports and the Arts, it has been possible to re-surface all eight tennis courts used by the Phoenix Tennis Club at the Colchester Institute Sports Ground in Spring Lane, Colchester. The Foundation is a charitable trust set up by the football pools companies to provide funds for sports and the arts.

The picture shows the opening of the new courts by Mr Les Lamb and Mrs Maureen Barton, two founder members of Phoenix, with the then Chairman, Mr David Jones, looking on. The opening ceremony was followed by an American tournament in aid of the St Helena Hospice.

The application for funds was made jointly by the Club and the Colchester Institute, the owners of the courts, and was endorsed by Colchester Borough Council and Colchester Sports Council. The grant, together with additional monies provided by Phoenix and the Colchester Institute, made up the total sum. The work was carried out by Essex Tennis Courts Ltd.

In a statement at the time, the then Chairman of Phoenix Tennis Club and the Colchester and District Tennis League, David Jones, said that the improved courts were a valuable acquisition for tennis in Colchester. He felt that the Club has been successful in its application because of the range of activities that it offers. That included social events, a junior coaching programme, individual and American competitions, and the participation by ten teams in the Colchester and District and Friendly tennis leagues.

With the improved facilities, Phoenix has been able to expand its membership. It has also been able to establish its beginners/improvers arm of the club, Phoenix Rising. So whatever your standard, Phoenix Tennis Club is for you. For more information contact David Morran or 'phone 01206 864144.
