About the club

Phoenix is a very active and friendly tennis club with nine teams in both the Colchester and District tennis league and the Friendly League. We play throughout the year on the eight hard courts owned by the Colchester Institute in Spring Lane, Colchester. We cater for members of all ages: our youngest is 11 years old and our eldest 82 (and still plays a mean game).

You don't have to be a budding Henman or Henin to be a member of Phoenix (though you would be very welcome!) as we have members of all abilities. The Friendly League is intended specifically for older or less experienced players, or for those who simply wish to enjoy less intensive competitive tennis.

We have a variety of club competitions. There are also as many American Tournaments as we can fit into the season.

When the club meets

The club meets on every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6pm and on Saturday afternoons from 2pm in the summer season (1st April to 30th September). During the winter months, we meet on Sunday mornings from 10am; there is also a club session on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm for the non-workers.

Membership Information

If you would like to join Phoenix then please contact David Morran or 'phone 01206 864144. You will be asked to come and play three times in order that the committee can assess whether your standard of play is good enough (you have to be able to play a reasonable club doubles game).

Club competitions

We have a variety of club competitions:

We also have an `accumultive American Tournament' trophy. At each American Tournament the number of points scored by players is noted and the lady and gent with the highest score at the end of the summer season are jointly awarded The Tony Page Trophy.

Our Richard Crundell Trophy is not about how well members play tennis but how they serve the club. Each year, all the members vote for the lady and gent who have best upheld the fine spirit of Phoenix.
