March

The 2008 season will soon be under way! This newsletter explains some of the areas likely to affect the club and gives key dates/information relating to the club.

  1. Making Aces.
Making Aces are continuing with their plans to take a lease on the Spring Lane courts from the Institute. Thus we may have new landlords in the future. The committee has met with both Making Aces and the Institute to ensure certain safeguards are in place. There has been good collaboration with both Making Aces and the Institute - both of whom wish Phoenix to continue to operate as a club at Spring Lane.

  2. Westend.
As many of you know the West End club are no longer able to operate out of Eudo Road. Many of their players have been using the Spring Lane courts throughout the winter. The committee has offered West End players membership of Phoenix. For those people who join this will strengthen our club, widen the net for team selection and increase the numbers for club play. As with any new members please make the players welcome.

  3. Clubhouse.
The Institute have advised that following the correction of some building faults the clubhouse should be available for use from 1st April.

  4. Teams.
Six teams have been entered into the C&D league (2 mens, 2 mixed, 2 ladies). A schedule of matches and Phoenix tournaments will be issued in April and selected team players notified.

  5. Club Play and American Tournaments.
The first club sessions will be on Tuesday 1st April from 6pm, Thursday 3rd April from 6pm and on Saturday 5th April at 2pm. American Tournaments will take place on the first Saturday of every month except July when to avoid Wimbledon it will be on the 12th. The first American tournament will be on Saturday 5th April. Please arrive in time to start at 2.00pm. This will be our charity event in aid of the British Heart foundation. Please support the event and raffle prizes will be gratefully received. American Tournaments take the form of 'social tennis'. Normal club play operates via 'arranged fours' which works to provide enjoyable tennis for all through a combination of 'fours' arranged based on ability and 'mixing in'. This spirit is for all members to uphold so that all members benefit. Committee members will help to ensure fair play.

  6. Phoenix Rising will continue so if you know of anyone who wants to start playing tennis, then direct them to Christine.

  7. Phoenix clothing will be available soon.
